As a schoolboy Owen developed a love of the outdoors by persistently getting into detention. He soon realised if he was very naughty his punishment was up to 3 hours manual outside work instead of being stuck inside for an hour.
It was only really when Owen was 18 that he discovered the possibility of a career in Garden & Landscpae Design. He felt disillusioned with university life and started working for his now father-in-law who ran a landscaping business in Rutland. They developed a fantastic local reputation for high quality landscape work and Owen soon looked to challenge himself further.
In 2011 Owen became one of 3 finalists in the RHS Young Garden Designer of the Year Competition with ‘The Green Room’ at RHS Tatton Park Flower Show, winning a Silver medal. The stresses of show gardens did not deter Owen from entering a further 13 shows, winning 4 RHS Gold and Best in Shows.
Owen believes show gardens are a way to explore ideas that are not always suitable for a domestic garden space and has a specific interest in manifesting philosophical and abstract ideas in spatial form.
In 2013 Owen wanted to further his understanding in Landscape Design and started studying BA Hons Landscape Architecture at Birmingham City University as a mature student. Whilst working full-time running MOSAIC Garden Design and supporting his young family, he secured a first class degree and Post Graduate Diploma.
Also in that time, Owen has contributed to the National Design Academy’s Garden Design course, undertaking talks and lectures on all aspects of design/build and supported various community based projects.
In 2016 Owen was invited to the first International Flower Festival to take place in Besikitas, Istanbul. He was part of a multinational collection of designers and artists who undertook installations around the city engaging local communities with horticulture.
In 2016 Owen worked closely with the TCV in Birmingham, designing the Health for Life Community Garden winning GOLD and BEST IN SHOW at BBC Gardners World Live at the NEC 2016 sponsored by Mondelez Intl. Owen has been helping with the strategic vision for growning spaces within Birmingham, with particular focus on developing derelict ex-industrial space including an area at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Over the last two year’s he has split his time between working with Poolscape on a variety of exciting natural swimming pool projects including being the lead designer on the Love2Stay project and working with Tesco PLC on a series of show gardens and installations.
Outside of working Owen jointly takes care of his garden enthusiast children who are often found helping out with shows and projects. Owen and his family live in Rutland with their dog Lilia, 3 guinea pigs and 2 rabbits.
